What do a group of radical young Italian architects from the '60s have to do with a Canadian indie rock band and one of the coolest designers in New Orleans, you ask? "Metric came to me looking for something reminiscent of Superstudio," designer Scott Campbell explains. "Which, coincidentally, has been a huge influence on my recent work." Submerged in Superstudio's photomontage mode of creating architectural wonders, Campbell professes a "love for their use of collage and the manner in which they created depth in their images." Of course, he had to add his own twist with a bit of "de Chirico-esque surrealism for that extra punch of weirdness." Boldly earning extra bonus points for folding in an additional Italian influence.

Campbell has long been a favorite, working on his own, and as part of the Young Monster collective (as featured in New Masters of Poster Design: Volume Two.) It is amazing to see him envelop his work with such strong outside visualizations, and emerge the victor.

The result is a blast of retro-feeling saturated color, helped along by the screenprinting process, yet clearly alluding to a sci fi future, and beckoning the viewer to the skyward door to another dimension—or is it? The solitary figure, glistening pool, long shadow, and gridded landscape, all play their parts, as does the delicate type below promoting the various concert dates. In many ways, it is the typography on both the top and bottom that make me such a believer in the imagery encompassing the bulk of the poster. Campbell's delicate touch, just right at every turn. Pulling from the past, and making tomorrow look amazing.
