Working with her partner in Spur Design (and husband) Dave Plunkert, designer/illustrator extraordinaire Joyce Hesselberth contemplated how to approach promoting the upcoming Gunpowder River Artfest. "This is our third season creating the look for the festival, and every year we focus on a different aspect of what it means to be creative," she explains. Deciding on an approach around the concept of "handmade," Hesselberth smiles as she adds, "this meant that we had the perfect excuse to work with ink and markers, and step away from the computer."
Few are as naturally gifted as this duo when it comes to laying ink down on paper. Adding in the hand-lettering of Andrea Kalfas, a brilliant illustrator in her own right, and you have a serious dream team at work. The results are whimsical and full of fun little twists and turns. Playing up the community apect, with nods to the vendors, crafts, activities, and food and wine, it just comes across as a wonderful place to bring the family and spend the day, which is the whole point.
The poster is also a reminder that some things never get old and certiain imagery always works. "In the end," she laughs and turns her palms up with a playful shrug of her shoulders, "what we ultimately did is regressed to our preschool days and created a giant turkey hand."
