Every once in a while, it is good to be reminded that a simple idea will trump anything you might be able to throw at the wall style-wise (literally, in this case.)

I have had the supreme pleasure to be able to watch the progress of the dynamic duo that comprises Post Typography up close, from running in the same music scenes and our geographic proximity, to judging student contests and the like, and the one thing I always take away from talking with Bruce Willen and Nolen Strals is how smart they are. Treading for much of their careers in street level art, they have always taken care to elevate everything that they do, whether providing sly infographics for Time, typographic bursts for ESPN, or adorning noise rock sleeves with their comic/zine-inspired drawings.

Building their early reputation around poster design, much of it illustrated by the two, it is even more intriguing to me to see them reach a moment of maturity where they can see through a brilliant concept with the absolute minimum of actual design from their hands.

"This poster promotes a series of design lectures where we focus on Post Typography's 'Greatest Misses' with a behind the scenes peek at the design process, illustrated with never-before-seen projects that fell just short, missed the mark, or were blown off-target by the fickle winds of client taste," explains Willen. "In our continued tradition of designing posters that are far too complicated to make and hang," he laughs, "we decided to use actual archery targets, with a hand-fletched arrow sticking out of the poster—off-target, of course."

After purchasing the pre-made target from a sporting goods store, the studio simply printed the pertinent information using a black and white laser printer onto colored card stock, attached to a dowel rod, and hung with a little extra hardware. Simple. Brilliant. The most on-target off-target poster of all-time.

The traveling roadshow continues with upcoming talks at the Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota on April 13, and the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore on April 16. More information here. Not to be missed! (Pun intended.)
