3M25 – Redeye from Seattle to NYC to give a speech at a design conference. Flight departs at 9:27pm and arrives at JFK at 5:15am. Okay, so there is this awkward time between when you arrive in the city and the time you can either get in your hotel room or your meeting or conference starts. During this enchanting time I get a chance to walk the streets with the last of the party goers, the women and men of the night, and the homeless; all inspirational moments to be sure. I go to the conference, give a talk, hang out, and then get back on an airplane that night to arrive back in Seattle 24 hours after I've left.
5G93 – Redeye from Seattle to Chicago for a client meeting. Depart at 9:50 pm and arrive at O'Hare at 6:15 am. Take the El to the city, walk a few blocks to the client meeting. Have a jovial time, decisions are made, beverages are drunk, and I head back to the train for a 5:50 pm flight back to Seattle arriving at 9:30 pm.
3R47 – 5:48 am flight from Seattle to Los Angeles for a potential client opportunity. Arrive in time for the 8:30 am meeting. After two hours I head back to the airport and am back at Tether by 2:30 pm.
3H6 – Redeye from Seattle to JFK and then take a car to a client meeting. I arrive before the doors are open so I sit on the curb waiting for the place to open. I greet the first employee as she arrives. I go in and wait in the lobby as the sun fully rises. After a full day of meetings I head back to the airport for a 7:15 pm flight back to Seattle.
3M17 – Speaking engagement in New Orleans at the AIGA chapter. I haven't been there for years, so excited to see my AIGA friends there like Wes McWhorter. 6:15 am flight from Seattle to Dallas for a connecting flight. Upon landing in Dallas they tell us thunderstorms may cause some problems. I wait at the airport for five hours and then get on an airplane back to Seattle. Sorry Wes. Hopefully I can make it up to you and New Orleans later.
3H22 – Toronto bound to give a presentation. Leave at 2:15 pm for an 11:38 pm arrival. Arrive at the hotel at 12:30 am and get up at 6:00 am to go to the venue for a presentation check at 7:00 am. I give the Keynote presentation at 8:30 am, visit with old friends and attend some of the sessions then catch a 5:30 pm flight to Chicago for a client meeting the next morning early, then back to O'Hare for an afternoon flight back to Seattle.
And you know what? I love every back-middle-seat-in-the-middle-of-the-night moment of it because I get to do what I love doing.
(Why so many redeyes you might ask? Answer: So I can have a life outside of traveling on an airplane all day.)
