In addition to doing design work, Jay also writes and researches, developing his ideas for other media outside graphic design. The most recent ideas he's worked with in the Presto campaign for Nike came from an article he wrote for the American magazine SOMA about the importance of the post-wild-style grafitti generation. "I wrote about how they were gathering in this tiny town in Tokyo called Naka Meguro, which has become a mecca for post-grafitti artists from all over the world, and how their art appears on lamp posts and walls and so forth, and how these people were completely different from the first grafitti artists. This article became kind of like a launching pad for that Presto idea. The influences can come through my writing. Currently I am working on a basketball project as an art director. I do a number of diverse projects."

Creative directors need to stay creative
Workflow and In-House Dynamics
John C Jay does an amazing job of balancing the mangagement of his award-winning creative team at Wieden+Kennedy, Tokyo, and running his own freelance studio, Studio J. At this studio he takes on jobs with high-profile clients such as Lucasfilm, for which he did the Star Wars, Episode One advertising campaign for Asia and Europe. He comments, "Wieden+Kennendy at this stage is a lot about creative mangement responsibilities, but at the heart of my existence I'm still an art director and designer. Certainly through my talented staff, I'm able to implement some of my thinking."
